지난 23일 낮 12시에 미국 연합감리교회 뉴잉글랜드연회 한인 목회자, 가족, 보스톤 대학교 신학대학원 교직원, 미국인 목회자들이 보스톤대학교 마쉬채플(Boston University Marsh Chapel) 앞에 있는 미국 사회 정의 운동의 상징인 마틴 루터 킹 목사 기념 조형물 옆에서 성명서를 발표하고 기도회를 열었다.

참석자들은 대한민국에 만연한 불의함을 보며 목회자로서 예언자적인 목소리를 내지 못한 죄를 회개하고, 유족들의 눈물 씻어주기를 기도했다. 또한 단 하나의 생명도 구조하지 못한 무책임하고 무능한 정권이더 큰 국민적 저항을 불러오기 전에 스스로 물러나기를 촉구했다.

또한 이번 참사는 몇몇 특정인물들의 잘못뿐만 아니라 인명을 중시하지 않고 성과, 사리 사욕과 그리고 집단의 이익만을 쫓는 사회구조로 인한 것임을 밝히고 이번 참사를 계기로 인간 생명의 보호를 최우선하는 사회가 되도록 정부와 사회 지도자들에게 촉구했다.

마지막으로 이번참사에서 드러난 정부의 방송장악과 언론통제 그리고 여론 조작을 통해 국민들의 입과 귀를 막는 것을 규탄하며 헌법이 보장하는 언론의 자유와 표현의자유를 보호할 것을 요구하였다.

이번 행사에 참석하기 위해 메인주와 버먼트, 또뉴햄프셔주에서 5시간을 운전해 오신 목사님들은 "비록 먼 거리였지만 뜻 깊은 일에 동참할 수 있어 기뻤고 보람이 있었다"고 전했다. 또한 모임에 참석하지 못한 120여 명의 뉴잉글랜드 연회 소속 목회자들(한인·미국인)은 각자 있는 곳에서 모임을 위해 기도로 동참했다. 5월 23일 현재 45명이 서명에 동참하였고 앞으로계속해서 서명을 받을 계획이다. 아래는 공식적으로 발표된 성명서 전문이다.

[전문] 세월호 참사에 대한 목회자들의 성명서

AStatement by Pastors about the Sewol Ferry Tragedy in South Korea
2014년 5월 23일

1. 우리는 세상에서 빛의 자녀로 살지 못하고 어둠의 자녀로 살아온 죄를회개합니다. 또한 정의가 강같이 흐르는 하나님의 나라를 이땅에 이루는 일을 하지 못하고 세상의 풍조에 따라살아온 죄를 회개합니다. 아울러 권력만능주의, 물질 만능주의,보신 만능주의에 물들어 버린 우리의 조국 대한민국의 현실을 보면서도 목회자로 예언자의 외침을 하지 못한 것을 회개합니다.

2. 세월호 참사로 인해 생명을 잃은 피해자분들을 기리며 그리고 피해자 가족분들을위해 기도합니다. 인간의 생명은 하나님께서 창조하신 것으로 세상 그 무엇보다도 고귀한 것입니다.하나님께서 사랑하는 가족을 잃고 비통해하는 유족들의 눈에서 눈물을 씻어주시고 슬프고 아픈 마음을 위로해주시기를 간절히기도합니다.

3. 세월호가 침몰하던 최악의 상황에서 자신의 고귀한 생명을 희생하고 남을 살려낸 하늘의 별과 같은 고귀한 삶을 사신 분들을 잊지 않겠습니다. 박지영 승무원, 정현선 승무원, 김기웅 승무원, 양대홍 사무장,단원고 남윤철 교사, 최혜정 교사, 전수영교사 그리고 단원고 학생 정차웅군은 우리 마음속에서 빛으로 살아있을 것입니다.

4. 세월호 참사로 귀한 생명을 잃은 유가족들의 아픔과 고통은 쉽게 잊히거나아물수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 박근혜 정부는 이제라도 국민을 하늘 처럼 여기며 유족들의 아픔을 치유하고 고통을덜어주는 일에 책임을 다해 주기를 요구합니다.

5. 대 국민 담화를 통해 대통령의 책임을 인정하고 사과를 하였지만 진정성을 보기 힘들었습니다. 이번 참사 이후 가장 중요한 것 중의 하나인 철저한 진상규명의 의지를 볼 수가 없으며, 인사권자로서의 자아성찰 없이 하위부서에 책임을전가하여 "만기친람"의 칼자루를 더욱 쥐는 모습, 구조적인 병폐를 언급하면서도 친기업규제 완화와 적폐의 거울을보기보다는 지엽적인 방안으로 여론을 분산시키는 모습, 언론통제와 조작에 대한 사과 한마디 없이 측근을 방송통신위원회위원장에 내정함으로써 국민을 우롱하는 모습 등에 실망을 금할 수 없습니다. 이번 대국민 담화의 진정성을 볼수 있게 후속 조치들을 확실하게 해 주길 요구합니다.

6. 세월호 참사 이후 국민이 맡긴 대통령의 책임을 다하지 못한/안한 것에 대한 책임을 지고 박근혜 대통령은 사퇴할 것을 요구합니다.

7. 세월호 참사이후 무능과 무책임의 극치를 보여준 내각은 책임을 통감하고 총사퇴할 것을 요구합니다.

8. 이번 세월호 참사는 인간의 생명을 중시하지 않고 자신들의 사익만을 추구하는집단과 이를 보호하는 악한사회구조로 인한 것입니다. 그리고 세월호 사건은 많은 사람들을 구조할 수 있는 충분한시간이 있었지만 잘못된 대응과 특정집단의 이익을 위해 구조시간을 허비함으로서 빚어진 참극입니다. 이번 참극의 진상규명이 확실히 이루어지도록 요구합니다.이번 사건을 계기로 우리 사회가 가시적인 성과와 효율성보다 인간생명의보호를 최우선 하는 사회가 되도록 정부와 사회 지도자들의 발상 전환을 요구합니다.

9. 박근혜 정부는 방송장악과 언론 통제 그리고 여론 조작을 통해서 국민들의입과 귀를 막으려는 모든 행동들을 즉각 중단하고 헌법이 보장하는 언론의 자유를 보장할 것을 요구합니다.

[영문] AStatement by Pastors about the Sewol Ferry Tragedy in South Korea

May23, 2014

1.We repent of our sin for not living in the world as children of the light, butof the darkness, colluding in the greed and spiritual blindness of the world.We repent of our sin for not working towards attaining the kin(g)dom ofGod/reign of God where justice flows like a river, but rather being drawn intothe drift of the world. We repent of having not spoken prophetically whilewitnessing our mother country South Korea sunk deeper into politicalauthoritarianism, materialism and protectionism.

2.We remember the victims of the recent Sewol ferry disaster and continue to prayfor their grieving families. A life of human being is nobler than anything inthe world as God's creation. We earnestly pray that God will wipe away thetears from the eyes of victims' family for losing their loved ones and comforttheir mourning hearts.

3.We must not forget those who lived honorable lives as the stars in the sky, whosacrificed their own noble lives to save others in the midst of thecatastrophic sinking of the Sewol ferry. These names will be rememberedforever: Crew members, Park Jee Young, Jeong Hyun-seon, and Kim Ki-woong andYang Dae-hong, a chief officer; Teachers of Danwon High School, Nam Yun-cheol,Choi Hye-jeong and Jeon Soo-young; and Danwon High School student, Jeong Cha-woong.

4.The pain and suffering of families who have lost the beloved one to the ferrytragedy can be neither easily forgotten or healed. We demand the ParkAdministration to consider its citizens with highest significance and tofulfill its responsibility to comfort their pain and relieve their sufferingand that both the Park Administration and the commercial interests operatingthe ferry company be held responsible for their malfeasance.

5.Even after the official statement of apology made by President Park, we have noconfidence in the sincerity of her words. Rather than a desire for a thoroughinvestigation leading to a truthful response, we see an attempt to shift theblame away from herself and her administration. We see no desire to eliminate thestructural evils, but rather an attempt to assuage public opinion and dilutecriticism by raising false issues. We see no desire to apologize for trying tocontrol the press. Instead, she is trying to deflect attention from the endemiccorruption by appointing her own person as the chairperson of the KoreanCommunications Commission. We demand positive efforts that reflect truesincerity and that substantiate the truth of the recent apology to the public.Deeds, not words.

6.We ask for unlimited liability of President Park, to resign from the presidencyfor failing to fulfill her duties and responsibilities entrusted by the peoplein the aftermath of the ferry tragedy. At this point, President Park ought toconcretely admit her responsibilities and to apologize for the governments'incompetence and irresponsibility.

7.We demand resignation of the Cabinet for failing in its duties andresponsibilities in the aftermath of the ferry disaster.

8.The recent tragedy was a result of an evil social structure which protectsselfish groups who seek profits solely for themselves and their company, whiledishonoring human lives. Furthermore, the tragedy was made worse by wastingplenty of rescue opportunities, lacking adequate emergency protocols,inadequate training of ship personnel, and prioritizing profits over humanlives. We demand the truth to be told about this incident. We demand changingof thoughts and behaviors of the bureaucrats of the South Korean government,businesses and leaders of the Korean society, so that our society will berestructured to one that prioritizes the sanctity and security of all humanlives.

9.We request an immediate end to the Park Administration's control over themedia, press control, and all actions of manipulating the public opinion tosuppress the public's freedom of speech, and to ensure the freedom of the pressguaranteed by the Constitution.
